    Remarks:
The arch was built by Charles E. Tilton as a memorial to his family and himself. It is based on the Arch of Titus in Rome, Italy, which Tilton saw in 1881 while touring Europe. The arch was designed by Dow who eliminated the elaborate architectural and sculptural embellishments of the Roman monument. The granite sarcophagus was cut and prepared in Aberdeen, Scotland. Cost of the arch was estimated to be $30,000. The arch remained in the Tilton family until the early to mid-1900's when it was turned over by Charles E. Tilton, Jr. to the town of Northfield.
