Full-length figure of a Union soldier. He wears a uniform including boots, jacket and broad-brimmed hat. He holds a rifle in his hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of his feet. A bedroll hangs over his back and a large pouch is slung from his proper right shoulder and rests on his proper right hip. He has a beard and moustache. The granite sculpture stands atop a tall granite base consisting of a shaft, tapered die, and ending in three rough-hewn steps. On the front face of the shaft is a bas-relief trophy with a pair of crossed flags and an eagle carrying a banner in its beak. A shield covers its chest. It holds a bunch of arrows in its proper left talons and an olive branch in its proper right talons.

The sculpture was funded by the town ($2,000) and the Women's Relief Corps, No. 11 ($600). The monument was designed by Hazelton and built by Charles A. Bailey Monumental Works in Manchester, NH.
