    Description: 
    Full-length figure of a Union soldier. He wears a uniform including boots, jacket and broad-brimmed hat. He holds a rifle in his hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of his feet. A bedroll hangs over his back and a large pouch is slung from his proper right shoulder and rests on his proper right hip. He has a beard and moustache. The granite sculpture stands atop a tall granite base consisting of a shaft, tapered die, and ending in three rough-hewn steps. On the front face of the shaft is a bas-relief trophy with a pair of crossed flags and an eagle carrying a banner in its beak. A shield covers its chest. It holds a bunch of arrows in its proper left talons and an olive branch in its proper right talons.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was funded by the town ($2,000) and the Women's Relief Corps, No. 11 ($600). The monument was designed by Hazelton and built by Charles A. Bailey Monumental Works in Manchester, NH. IAS files contain copies of related excerpts from William Whitacher's "History of the Town of Haverhill, New Hampshire", Concord: 1919, pg. 390-393; and David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historical Society, 1980, pg. 88-89.
