Full-length figure of a Union soldier at parade rest. He wears an overcoat with cape thrown back over his proper right shoulder, a cap and has a moustache. He holds a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. The granite sculpture stands atop a stepped granite pedestal which sits on a three-stepped base.

Cost of the sculpture was $900. $250 was provided by the town, with additional funding provided by the Soldiers' Aid Society and private donation. The design for the monument, but not the sculpture, was provided by C.C. Beaman of New York and Cornish, NH. IAS files contain transcriptions of names inscribed on the monument. IAS files contain copy of related excerpt from William H. Child's "History of the Town of Cornish, New Hampshire", Concord, NH: 1911, pg. 236-240; and excerpt from David Ruell's unpublished manuscript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire", Concord: New Hampshire Historical Society, 1980, pg. 24-26.
