Description:
The memorial consists of several sculptural components. The figure of J. Sterling Morton, depicted wearing an overcoat and holding a cane in his proper left hand and a hat in his proper right hand, is mounted on a rectangular base. An exedra is located behind the statue of Morton and is decorated with two bronze relief panels--the panel to the proper left of Morton depicts a scene with Indians and colonial settlers; the panel to the proper right depicts a nude female figure kneeling down to plant a tree in a pastoral landscape. A life-size figure of the goddess Daphne is situated in the grass in front of Morton and the exedra. Her head is bowed and she holds a leafless tree branch in her proper left hand.

J. Sterling Morton was Secretary of Agriculture and founder of Arbor Day. Inscription on surrounding bench reads: LOVE OF HOME IS PRIMARY PATRIOTISM - OTHER HOLIDAYS REPOSE UPON THE PAST - ARBOR DAY PROPOSES FOR THE FUTURE (Lower bench area:) ERECTED BY THE ARBOR DAY MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION IN MEMORY OF JULIUS STERLING MORTON MCMV.
