Obelisk features a full-length portrait of Captain John Mullan in bas-relief. Mullan wears a hat and buckskins and holds a rifle in his proper right hand.

Remarks:
Gift of the children of Captain James H. Mills under the auspices of the Montana Society of Pioneers. The gift honors the friendship of Captain Mills and Captain John Mullan, surveyor and constructor of the Military Road from Fort Benton, Montana to Walla Walla, Washington. Originally located at the Milwaukee Depot, Milwaukee Avenue, Deer Lodge, which follows the Old Mullan Road. It was moved to the courthouse lawn in the early 1980s. This is one of several Mullan Road markers erected by the Montana Society of Pioneers.
