Remarks:
Monument was funded with donations, the sales of postcards with the monument's picture and a children's penny campaign. In the late 1950s or early 1960s, a high wind caused a parked truck to strike the monument, knocking off the figure whose head became detached. The figure was sent to Italy, where it had come from, for repair. IAS files include a related article from the Winston County Journal, June 24, 1921.
