    Remarks:
Commissioned by the State Park Commission in 1964 for the newly acquired Samuel Dale State Park. Samuel Dale (1772-1841) was an army general, military scout, trader and representative in the Mississippi State Legislature. The land for the two acre park was donated by the Daleville Methodist and Baptist Churches. State Congressman G. V. Montgomery sponsored legislation designating the area a state park. It was through his efforts and those of local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Lauderdale County Historical Society that the remains of Dale were disinterred from Cochran Cemetery outside Daleville and moved to the site. Since there were no pictures of Dale in existence, the artist based the likeness on descriptions from the book "Life and Times of General Sam Dale," by J. F. H. Claiborne, a contemporary and friend of Dale. IAS files include related articles the Meridian Star (Meridian, MS) and information from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Historic Preservation Division.
