    Description: 
    A soldier stands at attention with his proper right hand supporting the rifle at his side, the butt of which rests at his feet. Both of his hands are held close to his side. He is wearing short boots, leggings and knickers, a short jacket and a wide-brimmed hat. The sculpture is mounted on a three-tiered base. The upper two tiers are polished; the lowest tier is unpolished. The base originally held two bronze plaques, only one remains.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture honors all servicemen of the Saline community who served during World War I. The sculpture was originally installed in front of Saline High School (now called the Union School), dedicated in 1922 on Labor Day. On May 25, 1975, the sculpture was relocated by the American Legion to its current site. In 1975, the sculpture was sandblasted and painted. IAS files contain a photocopy of a historic photograph showing sculpture in front of Saline High School from Ann Arbor News, Sept. 26, 1956. IAS files contain articles from the Saline Reporter, Aug. 17, 1922; Sept. 7, 1922; and May 28, 1975.
