    Remarks:
The inscription on the wall behind the sculpture reads: TO THOSE OF HAMILTON AND WENHAM WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/(list of names). The Hamilton-Wenham community House was given by the Mandell family in honor of the eight men of both towns who died during World War I. As a further tribute, 165 friends of the Mandells joined together to commission Anna Coleman Ladd to create a bronze statue depicting an aviator. Thomas Mandell, who closely resembled his brother, Samuel, posed for the sculpture. Originally, Ladd envisioned her sculpture above a drinking fountain with a relief of a propeller behind him. However, after a conference with the architect of the community house, Guy Lowell, the plan was changed and the front porch was redesigned to accommodate the new sculpture.
