    (On front of base:) THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE LOYALTY AND PATRIOTISM OF OUR CITIZEN SOLDIERS WHO FOUGHT FOR LIBERTY AND THE UNION IN THE GREAT REBELLION OF 1861-1865 (On left side of base:) PRESENTED BY/WILLIAM H. GAYLORD/A.D. 1896 (On right side of base:) FROM THESE HUNDRED DEAD WE TAKE INCREASED DEVOTION TO THE CAUSE FOR WHICH THEY GAVE THE LAST FULL MEASURE OF DEVOTION. WE HERE HIGHLY RESOLVE THAT THE DEAD SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN AND THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH/A LINCOLN
