The monument was erected in honor of the men from Halifax who served in the Civil War. The monument cost $1,000 and was the first Civil War monument erected in the state of Massachusetts. Caroline Soule led the movement to establish this monument after her son, Charles W. Soule, died at Newborne, North Carolina in Dec. 1862.
