    Remarks:
Originally, the monument was erected to honor John Fitch (1708-1795), a man responsible for the incorporation of both Ashby (1767) and Fitchburg (1764). The monument was also erected to commemorate the lives of two soldiers who were killed when Fitch's garrison was attacked by Native Americans on July 5, 1748 (the date 1746 is inscribed on the base of the obelisk, but according to the SOS! surveyor, this is incorrect). Later an inscription was added on the base to commemorate Civil War soldiers. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated March 1, 1976.
