    Description: 
    A figure of a Civil War soldier, dressed in a military uniform consisting of a knee-length coat, a cape, and a brimmed cap, stands at parade rest holding the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt rests near his proper right foot. The figure is placed atop a tall base with a circular upper half, an octagonally-shaped midsection decorated on four of its sides with emblematic designs of the G.A.R., the W.R.C., an anchor and chain, and crossed muskets and a knapsack, and a four-sided lower section.

    Remarks: 
    The Stephen Davis Post #11, Grand Army of the Republic, initiated the idea for a monument to honor their "comrades in arms." The monument cost $3,300. The veterans raised $2,300, with the town supplying the remaining $1,000. IAS files contain related excerpts from Sanger Mills Cook's "Pittsfield on the Sabasticook," 1966, pg. 93, 94; and Mildred C. Baruch and Ellen J. Beckman's "Civil War Union Monuments," Washington, D.C.: Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1978, pg. 66. IAS files contain related materials from the Pittsfield Historical Society.
