Description:
Full-length figure of a uniformed Union soldier stands atop a tall decorative pedestal. His proper right arm is across his chest and he holds the top of a sword in his proper right hand. His proper left arm is embracing a flagpole with flag.

Remarks:
Commissioned by Henry B. Cleaves, former Governor of Maine and native of Bridgton. Some twenty-five years prior to the monument's erection, Governor Cleaves and his brother, Judge Nathan B. Cleaves, planned to present a memorial to the Town of Bridgton. Judge Cleaves died about five years later, leaving Governor Cleaves to carry out the donation. IAS files include excerpts from the books "Dedication of the Soldiers' Monument, Bridgton, Maine," by Philip Willis McIntyre and "1768-1994: An Updated Bicentennial History," by the Bridgton Historical Society, (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1993).
