A complex monument consisting of five figurative sculptures and four bas-relief panels. At the top, a winged goddess, possibly Victory, holds a wreath above her head. Below them, bas-relief panels depict: on the east, four artillerymen, cannon and cartridge; on the south, six infantrymen in uniform with packs walking in single file; on the west side, five cavalrymen on horseback, some with sabers held high; and on the north, a naval vessel, possibly the Monitor.

Hillside Cemetery, Kinsley, Kansas
Remarks:
The sculpture reportedly cost $980.00 to $3,000 and was funded through local donations as a memorial to Civil War soldiers. The sculpture is known locally as the Old Soldiers Monument. In 1950, the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars painted the sculpture. IAS files contain a related article from the Kinsley Mercury, June 7, 1917, which contains a partial list of those who subscribed to the sculpture's fund; and an excerpt from Myrtle H. Richardson's "The Great Next Year Country: A History of Edwards County, Kansas, and the Surrounding Area For the Years from 1901 to 1925," M.H. Richardson (Lewis, KS?): c1983. Sources differ on execution date. 1912 is the more probable date.
