A Civil War soldier stands in an "at rest" position with his proper left leg forward. His hands hold the upper end of his rifle, with the butt of the rifle resting on the ground in front and slightly to the proper right of his proper right foot. The rifle is centered over the soldier's proper left breast, his proper left hand above his proper right on the rifle muzzle. A portion of the rifle butt and the toe of the soldier's left foot extend beyond the edge of the plinth. The soldier has a moustache, but is otherwise clean-shaven. His head is covered by a cap. The soldier wears a greatcoat buttoned at the neck. The cape of the coat is thrown back over soldier's proper right shoulder and upper arm, leaving the hand and forearm exposed.
The soldier has a cap pouch in front, to the proper right of center, attached to the belt of the greatcoat. A bayonet hangs from a strap attached to his belt on his proper left side. A cartridge box is attached to the figure's belt toward the rear on his proper right side. A tree stump is adjoined to the figure's greatcoat on the rear proper left side. The sculpture is placed atop a polished square base.
