His fists are clenched at his side and he holds his pipe in the proper right side of his mouth. The work was done to commemorate Elzie Crisler Segar, creator of the Popeye comic character in 1929. Work commissioned and funded by the Xi Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, who solicited donations and sold Popeye memorabilia, spinach banks, Tshirts and punching bags to raise ten thousand dollars for the statue.
