The monument commemorates over 250 miners who lost their lives in one of the worst mine disasters in United States History. The granite shaft was erected by the miners of Illinois at a cost of $2,500, raised by popular subscription. The memorial was unveiled Nov. 13, 1911, on the second anniversary of the tragedy.
