Remarks:
Memorial commemorates the birth of Florida as a state and the assembling of Florida's first Constitutional Convention on this site in 1838. "St. Joseph," as Port St. Joe was called at the time, was selected because it was a thriving boomtown. Later, in the 1840s, it was destroyed by epidemic and hurricane and became a "vanished city." The sculpture is engraved with the names of Convention delegates. IAS files contain a related brochure, "Constitution Convention State Museum...More of the Real Florida," from the Florida Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recreation and Parks.
