The figure representing the Army was modeled after Sgt. Leonard Werth, who posed for the artist Wheeler Williams in his New York studio during the late 1940s. Sgt. Werth, a member of the First Army's military police company on Governors Island, was selected as the Army model by Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower during a visit to Governors Island. IAS files contain the Washington Post obituary (Feb. 28, 2010) for Sgt. Leonard Werth who died at age 89 in Arlington County, Virginia on Jan. 29, 2010.
