The four men named on the monument's plaque were the Middletown residents killed in World War I. The monument was reportedly the the first World War I monument in Delaware, and cost approximately $2,000, with all of the funding contributed by area residents. It has been moved and modified. A sculpture of an eagle formerly surmounted the column, but was removed for maintenance in 1993 or 1994.
