Frederick William and Abigail Brinsmade Gunn founded the Gunnery School, a private preparatory school, in Washington, CT in 1850. The school's campus adjoins the library. Mr. Gunn was instrumental in organizing the library association, which preceded the present one. Van Ingram, an import-export merchant active in the construction of the library, is said to have arranged for the plaques.
