Erected by the City of Thomaston under the auspices of the C. L. Russell Post, No. 68, Grand Army of the Republic. Fundraising continued after the monument was erected, which proceeds from theatrical performances contributing to the fund. A marker in honor of Thomaston citizens who served in World War I was later placed at the front, and one for World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War was later placed at the rear. IAS files include an excerpt from "The Story of Thomaston, Its Origin and Development," by Rosa F. Gangloff (Waterbury, 1975).
