Remarks:
Funding for the Civil War memorial came from war veteran Colonel Charles Warren (1853-1920), who left $25,000 in his will for a "Soldier's Monument." IAS files contain a copy of the dedication program which refers to the female figure as "America Remembers" or "The Spirit of Decoration Day." The flowers held by the figure are symbolic: the forget-me-nots symbolize immortality; the palms, Glory; roses for love, and the poppies eternal rest. For related information see: Mildred C. Baruch and Ellen J. Beckman, "Civil War Union Monuments," (Washington, D.C.:) Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1978, pg. 18.
