    Description: 
    A tan granite fountain with top piece and wings. The basin is rectangular with rounded corners. The top piece rises from the back of the basin and is rectangular with a curvilinear top. Above the water on the front of the top piece is a lion's head in bronze, with open mouth through which water flows via an iron pipe. Curved, low wings sit on either side of the basin.

    Remarks: 
    The fountain was a gift of DeLambre Bates (1847-1921) and was built as a utilitarian device to provide water to animals. In addition to the fountain, water rights to the spring which feeds it and $500 were included in the gift to the town. The money was to be used for maintenance of the fountain. IAS files contain a copy of relevant material from "Preston in Review," pg. 164 (Preston Historical Society, In. 1971.)
