Remarks:
Dedicated to all who served in the Civil War. A monument was originally proposed in 1884 by the Veteran Soldiers' Association; however, the funds raised for the monument, by taxation and private contribution, were instead used to build Memorial Town Hall in 1886. After the Spanish-American War, the Town of North Haven received free of charge a Civil War Rodman gun that became surplus from Lighthouse Point, New Haven, Connecticut. The cannon's carriage was purchased by the New Haven Superintendent of Parks, on behalf of North Haven, with funds raised by the Veteran Soldiers' Association. The base was designed by an unknown North Haven veteran. S. W. Lucas supplied the granite for the base, which was set by Charles N. David of Stiles Brick Company. A time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the base. IAS files contain detailed dimensions of the base and information from "Souvenir North Haven Memorial, Dedication of the Soldiers' Monument, North Haven, Conn., Veteran Soldiers' Association, 1905." Other related unpublished records are housed at the North Haven Historical Society, North Haven, Connecticut.
