The sculpture was donated by Edward Williams Marsh, Captain of Company M, Second Connecticut Volunteers, Heavy Artillery, in memory of the Union soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War, and in memory of Abraham Lincoln. The sculpture is reportedly the only Civil War monument dedicated to Lincoln in Connecticut. A copy of the monument's dedication program is on file with the New Haven County Historical Society.
