    Remarks:
Discussions for the monument began in 1872. John Beattie was commissioned to execute the base, using a modification of a design by James G. Batterson. Pink granite from a Leete's Island quarry was used. The base was completed and dedicated in 1877, and lettering was added in 1879. The figure was commissioned in 1884 and dedicated in 1887. The total cost of the monument was $2,585. An article from the Shoreline Times (Guilford, CT), quoting from a 1937 news item, states that the figure is made from Rhode Island granite.
