Viomenil was a French army officer who served in America under Rochambeau. The painting is a copy after a portrait by de Laval in the Versailles Gallery. In the 1915 collection catalog, the subject was wrongly identified as Antoine Charles du Houx, Baron de Viomenil (1728-1792), who was the brother of the sitter.
