Description:
A rectangular brick structure with two niches in the front, separated by a horizontal, shelf divider. The upper niche contains a medallion low relief bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., text plaque and urn with eternal flame. The bronze urn features an engraved image of the scales of Justice superimposed over a waist-length portrait of Dr. King, in proper right profile, giving his "I Have A Dream" speech, on the front; and an engraved cross and seven-flame candelabrum entitled "The Cross of Christ Revealed: Alpha and Omega," on the back. Both the relief medallion and the urn have a brown patina. The lower niche contains a second text plaque.

Remarks:
The memorial, a project of the Arkansas Minority Advisory Council, was dedicated on May 12, 1990 during Philander Smith College's commencement ceremony. IAS files contain related articles from the Arkansas Gazette, Oct. 17, 1989; the Arkansas Democrat, May 12, 1990, pg. 11-A, and Sept. 10, 1991, pg. 7-B; and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Jan. 16, 1994, pg. 1B. IAS files contain a copy of dedication/commencement program, May 12, 1990; and the artist's sketch of image on rear of urn.
