Remarks:
John Dunning Adams was born on June 23, 1827 in Dickson County, Tennessee, the son of Samuel and Rebecca May Adams. He moved with his family to Johnson County, Arkansas in the 1830s, then to Little Rock in 1842. He died on Dec. 7, 1892. On May 2, 1848 he marred Catherine Yeiser. He served in the war with Mexico and in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was a planter, a merchant, and a steamboat captain who established the first steamboat line running on the Arkansas River from Little Rock to Arkansas City, and from Memphis to New Orleans. He served as private secretary to Governor Thomas S. Drew from 1847-1850.
