Description:
A circular Aztec "calendar" with images of Aztec iconography in relief, including a face in the center. The plaster is finished to give the appearance of old stone. The sculpture is placed on a wall of an open rock shelter, set on a short square base, with a wrought iron fence in front. The shelter once had fuller side walls and a reinforced concrete roof overhang.

Remarks:
One of three replicas cast from a historic Aztec calendar in the Mexican National Museum. It was donated by Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Mexico's national oil monopoly, and brought from Juarez, Mexico. Jose Torres Palomar, an art director for Pemex, supervised its assembly and placement. W. T. Woodward served as contractor for the shelter, which was originally fourteen feet high. When the sculpture was dedicated, City Hall Park was renamed Calendar Park.
IAS files contain newspaper articles from the El Paso Times dating from Dec. 12, 1952 to July 22, 1960.
