Remarks:
When Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin passed through Sutton to lay out the Post Road, he set a road marker several rods below the present marker site. Bartholomeau Woodbury kept a tavern nearby on Boston Road and promised that if the marker were placed in front of his tavern, he would carve a fine granite marker superior to the type ordinarily used for such purposes. His offer was accepted and at the bottom of the marker, he chiseled his initials B.W. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated April 5, 1982.
