    Description: 
    A Civil War infantry soldier stands at rest holding the barrel of his rifle in front of him with both hands, the butt of which rests on the ground. He wears a coat, a cape, and a cap. The sculpture is mounted atop a three-part, tapered base with a stepped bottom.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture cost just under $1,200 and commemorates soldiers who fought and died for the Union during the Civil War. Funds were raised through public subscription by the local G.A.R. post and the W.R.C. In 1894, engineer P. B. Wines was contracted to install the sculpture, which was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1895. IAS files contain an excerpt, from David L. Jaenig's "The Howell Bicentennial History," Howell, MI: The American Revolution Bicentennial Committee, pg. 182, 196; and articles from the Livingston Republican, May 23, 1895, pg. 1 and June 6, 1895, pg. 1; and the Livingston County Press, Aug. 28, 1963.
