Provenance:
Formerly located Crimea Mansion, 4901 Windsor Mill Road, Leaken Park, Baltimore, Maryland before 1948.
Remarks:
The Maryland Historical Society, in Baltimore, houses the Winans Papers, which contain additional information on these sculptures. The lions were originally located at the Crimea Mansion which was the summer home of Thomas Winans, a 19th century industrialist who built the first railroad in Russia from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Thomas Winans' mansion was built in 1856-57 and the lions stood at the front entrance. The lions were cast in Russia by the Winans Foundry and then shipped to Baltimore. The lions were moved to the Baltimore Zoo sometime after the City of Baltimore took over the Crimea Mansion and Leaken park in 1948.
Both lions received new backs. A panel approximately 11 in. wide and 27 in. long has been inserted into each lion and 5 plugs have been used in the repair process. Silver-colored plugs have been used to repair the mane. These plugs are non-magnetic and look like aluminum.
