    Description:
A standing portrait of Abraham Lincoln facing South. Lincoln is draped in a full length robe with head slightly bowed and appears to be in a contemplative mood. He steps forward on his proper right leg, with his body pitched forward. His proper right arm is folded across his chest and his hand holds the robe at the center of his chest. His proper left arm is held loosely at his side. His hands, feet, and head are slightly oversized. His figure beneath the robe is suggested by the folds and shape of the material. The hands and face are anatomically detailed. He stands on a simple rectangular base.

    Remarks:
Fred M. Torrey created the original 20 inch high model in 1935 after a Vachel Lindsay poem entitled "Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight." Charleston resident Louise Bing contacted Torrey about purchasing a Lincoln sculpture in honor of West Virginia's centennial celebration. Torrey offered the model of "Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight" to West Virginia around 1964-65. Louise Bing raised the $5,000 to purchase the 42 inch bronze model, and then went on to spearhead a drive to raise over $35,000 from the public to have the sculpture enlarged. Contributions from across the state came from school children, private citizens, and the West Virginia Arts and Humanities Council. However, the artist died in 1967, before the sculpture could be enlarged. Bernard Wiepper was commissioned to enlarge the original model to a nine foot plaster model which was then cast in bronze. The sculpture was dedicated on West Virginia's 111th birthday celebration on June 20, 1974.
IAS files contain a related article from the Sunday Gazette-Mail (Charleston, WV), Jan. 13, 1963 and two articles from unidentified newspapers which discuss the sculptor and his various Lincoln sculptures. IAS files also contain a magazine article: Bing, Louise, "Bringing Lincoln to West Virginia, Reminiscences by Louise Bing," Goldenseal (Fall 1981): pg. 65-69 which discusses the history of creation of the sculpture. The West Virginia State Archives clipping files contain additional information on the sculpture.
