Inscription:  unsigned Description:  Sculpture is an octagonal tower topped with a sphere. Relief images whose themes include humanity and the environment appear on each side, on three panels per side. Using the four main subject areas of anthropology, astronomy, botany and zoology, the images include a deer, Atlantic Puffin, water, the sun, moon and planets Neptune and Saturn, fire, flowers, bass, the Berlin Wall, cell mitosis, tire tracks, faces, a grasshopper, crane and images based on the work of M. C. Escher. Mary Dyer and Keith Leavitt were the instructors and Ronald Cross, artist in residence, was the project director. Funding was provided through a $5,000 Innovation Education grant from the Maine Department of Educational and Cultural Services. Additional funding was provided by the City of Winthrop and individual and corporate donations. IAS files contain a dedication program which lists the donors, related articles from the Kennebec Journal, Oct. 4, 1989, the Wayne Winthrop Mainer, Oct. 1989, Rag Times, the Winthrop High School student newspaper, 1990 and The Anvil's Ring v. 19 no. 1 (Summer 1991), a grant request to the Maine Department of Educational and Cultural Services, sketches and the text of the poem "Reflections from Nature," by Rev.
