Inscription:  (On front of shaft:) RESAGA/BENTONVILLE/NASHVILLE/ MURFREESBOROUGH/MISSIONARY RIDGE/6th/REGT./TO THE/CONFEDERATE DEAD/OF MADISON CO./ERECTED 1888./J.T.WHITEHEAD/BUILDER. (On west side of shaft:) FORT DONALDSON/CHICKAMAUGA/JONES BOROUGH/FRANKLIN/NEW HOPE/FEDERAL RECORDS SHOW THEY HAD/FROM FIRST TO LAST TWO MILLION SIX HUN-ĐRED THOUSAND MEN IN SERVICE WHILE THE/CONFEDERATES ALL TOLD HAD BUT LITTLE/OVER SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND (Back of shaft:) BRICES CROSS ROADS/PERRYVILLE/KENNESAW/ATLANTA/SHILOH/ HISTORY IS AN IMPARTIAL WITNESS/TO ITS PHILOSOPHIC JUDGMENT WE/COMMIT THE MOTIVES AND DEEDS/OF OUR IMMORTAL DEAD. Description:  A confederate soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a full beard and a uniform which includes a thigh-length coat and a billed cap. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt of the rifle rests on the plinth at his feet. His proper left leg is slightly bent and his proper left foot is slightly forward.
