Remarks:
William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) was a native of Charleston and a writer called "the antebellum South's leading man of letters." The Simms Memorial Association initiated the creation of a bust of Simms in 1872. The Clyde Steamship Line brought the finished work to Charleston without charge, the Carolina Art Association agreed to underwrite the costs of having it mounted, and a Winnsboro quarry donated several blocks of South Carolina granite. Colonel Edward B. White was the architect of the base, and E. T. Viett erected the base. The monument was dedicated on the ninth anniversary of Simm's death. Initially the monument bore the single word SIMMS and the date of dedication; the present inscription was added ca. 1950s. IAS files contain copy of newspaper article from the Post Courier (Charleston, SC), Sept. 29, 1977, which includes biographical information about Simms and the history of the monument.
