JOHN MULLAN/TRAIL/1953-1955 (On one side, bottom, incised letters:) ERECTED UNDER THE AUSPICES/OF MONTANA SOCIETY OF PIONEERS,/CONTRIBUTED/TO THE CITY OF MISSOULA BY/J.M. HANNAFORD, PRES.N.P.RY.CO. unsigned Description:  A marble obelisk with a standing portrait of Capt. Mullan in bas-relief. He holds a flintlock rifle in his proper right hand and the rifle's butt rests by his proper right foot. A pistol is tucked in his belt at his proper left side. He is wearing fringed buck-skin leggings, brimmed hat, and moccasins; and his proper right foot is propped on a stone.
