Remarks:
The lightning bolt and the kite were fabricated by the Crescent Iron Works Shop. The designs for this monument were first exhibited in 1933 at the Sculpture International show, but it was not until 1979 when the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Noguchi retrospective included a reproduction of the design that the Fairmount Park Art Association would consider realizing the monument. The Fairmount Park Art Association commissioned Noguchi to create the sculpture as a gift to celebrate Philadelphia's tricentennial. Funds were provided through the estate of George D. Widener. Noguchi selected the installation site which is located near the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
