    Description: 
    A white fiberglass abstraction of two figures. One figure stands atop the other and lifts an arm skyward. The sculpture is made up of long curvilinear forms, each one smoothly making the transition to the one above. The sculpture is placed on a concrete base and surrounded by shrubbery, flowers, and a circular walkway.

    Inscription on plaque in front of sculpture reads: "APOLLO"/ Created by Mark Warner '68/Warner's idea came from Sir Isaac Newton's,/"I stand on the shoulders of giants."/He named the statue "Apollo" in appreciation/for the space program./Alderson-Broaddus chose it for the/Centennial symbol - 1971 - because the college's/aspirations are dependent upon the past/and persons now here and to come. IAS files contain a news release and other materials from the Alderson-Broaddus College Library discussing the college's choice of this piece as their Centennial Symbol and the artist, Mark Warner's, background as an alumnus of the college.
