    Description: 
    Monumental abstract sculpture with one geometric welded steel form and two arches. Meets ground at 3 points on cement trapezoid bases. Color is black matte, smooth texture overall. Piece may be symbolic of astrological sign of Cancer, with crab-like position.

    Remarks: 
    Funded with a National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places grant of $20,000 given in 1969 to Hawaii Foundation of Arts and Culture. Additional funding was provided by Hawaii Foundation of Arts and Culture. The sculpture was a gift from the artist to the University of Hawaii. Tony Smith had been a visiting professor on campus several years prior to the creation of this sculpture. The cost was $54,000. Landscaping ($25,000) was done by George Walters. The sculpture was constructed under the direction of Jack Yamanaka at Hawaii Welding Co. SOS! survey lists execution date as 1976; State Foundation exhibition catalog gave execution year as 1977. IAS files contain related newsclipping from Sunday Star-Bulletin and Advertiser, Sept. 5, 1976, C-8.
