Remarks:
Funded by public subscription, the State of Rhode Island, and the City of Providence. The sculpture cost $55,000. During the Civil War, Ambrose Burnside served as commander of the Army of he Potomac before that position was held by General U.S. Grant. Later he served as governor of Rhode Island and as a United States senator. The monument was originally located at the east end of Exchange Place (Providence, Rhode Island), 1887-1906. Original base (approx. H. 28 ft.) was designed by Henry O. Avery. The design of the base was modified by William R. Walker in 1906, when the sculpture was relocated from the center of traffic to its current location, the northeast corner of City Hall Park, also known as Burnside Park. IAS files contain copy from Robert Freeman & Vivienne Lasky's "Hidden Treasure: Public Sculpture in Providence," Providence: Rhode Island Bicentennial Foundation, 1980, which discusses the dedication and provides biographical information about Burnside. IAS files also contain copy of newspaper article from Providence Journal, Feb. 17, 1980, which also discusses Burnside's life.
