    Remarks:
The sculpture honors William Morgan, a politician and citizen of Batavia who spoke out against Free Masonry. Morgan was a native of Virginia and served as a captain in the War of 1812. The sculpture cost approximately $2,500 and was erected by Mr. Carter. Funds were contributed by friends and supporters of Morgan through a committee composed of veterans of the "Old Guard," a group who opposed the Free Masons in 1826. The sculpture was dedicated during their 14th National Convention on September 14, 1882. IAS files contain related articles from the Progressive Batavian, Feb. 3, 1882 through Sept. 8, 1882.
