Volk/Quincy ILL./1883/Chas F Heaton (Base front: Gov. John Wood/First Settler in Quincy/1822/Born 1798 Died June 4, 1880/Gov. of ILL. 1859 (Sculpture base front:) WOOD signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  Standing figure of Governor John Wood wearing a long beard. He stands next to a tree stump with his proper left foot forward and his proper left hand resting on the top of the stump. In his proper right hand he holds a rolled scroll. IAS files contain copies of Carl A. Landrum's, "Historical Sketches of Quincy, Illinois," Ouincy, IL: Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County, 1986 and The Quincy Herald-Whig (Quincy, IL), Oct. 27, 1985. According to the Quincy Herald article, copies of the city's newspaper, coins of the day, and other momentos were placed in the base of the monument during the dedication. The idea for the statue is believed to have originated in November 18, 1872, and was Volk's idea to credit Wood, the founder and father of Quincy. Wood was elected Councilman of Quincy in 1840; Mayor in 1844, 1852, and 1856. He was elected to the Illinois senate in 1850, and in 1856 was elected Lieutenant Governor.
