Description:
A seated portrait of George Washington dressed in the uniform of a Roman general consisting of a tunic, tightly fitting body armor, and a short cape fastened at the shoulder. The hair style is that of a Roman officer. Washington is shown with a pen in one hand and a tablet in the other, writing the first words of his farewll address as president.

Remarks:
In 1815, the State of North Carolina commissioned a neo-Classical statue of George Washington by AntonioCanova for the State Capitol rotunda. The statue was destroyed when the North Carolina State House burned in 1831. On May 13, 1970 a replica was installed to replace the original.
