    Description: 
    An obelisk whose shaft is topped with a helmet and a laurel wreath. On each side is a shield. One is the coat of arms for the state of South Carolina. One bears the name "Dickinson," and the other two bear the names of Vera Cruz and Conturas and Churubusco. The obelisk rests on a pedestal and multi-tiered base.

    Additional information is available from the Camden Archives, 1314 North Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020. IAS files contain a photocopied excerpt from "Camden Heritage," and from "A Descriptive Sketch of Camden, South Carolina," compiled and published by W. S. Alexander and JNO. W. Corbett, M.D., which contains the full text of the inscriptions. Lt. Col. James Polk Dickinson (1816-1847) was a native of Camden, SC, and a hero in the Mexican War. He is buried under this monument.
