Jean Nicolet (1598-1642) was a French explorer who was reportedly the first white European to visit Wisconsin. Sculpture was a gift in 1939-1940 from Wisconsin's school children, during the tenure of John Callahan, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Nearby plaque reads: "In 1634 Jean Nicolet, emissary of the government of Champlain of New France landed at Red Banks on the shores of Green Bay about a mile west of here. His mission was to arrange peace with the people of the sea and ally them with France."
