Description:
Carvings on the exterior walls of the courthouse include: two stone pelicans, one extending from each corner of the Broad Street entrance; two stone fascines (the term for a bundle of rods used as a symbol of justice), one on either side of the Broad Street entrance; a stone eagle over the White Street entrance; two stone figures, one depicting Liberty and one depicting Justice, flanking the White Street entrance; and four rectangular stone relief panels, one above each of the windows. Two of the panels depict the Louisiana state emblem, a pelican, flanked by the French and Spanish coats of arms and two of the panels depict the United State emblem, an American eagle, flanked by the French and Spanish coats of arms.

Remarks:
Models for the stone carvings were created by the artist in half size at her studio in New Orleans and were then shipped to Indiana where they were cut in full size. The building was designed by General Allison Owen of Diboll & Owen. IAS files contain related articles from the Morning Tribune (New Orleans, LA), Dec. 16, 1929; The Item Tribune (New Orleans, LA), Sept. 29, 1929; Courier-News (Plainfield, NJ), Oct. 21, 1930; The Sunday Star-News (Wilmington, NC), Oct. 19, 1930; The El Paso Times, Oct. 19, 1930, pg. 20; The Times-Picayune, May 26, 1929; and several additional unidentified newspaper articles which discuss the interior and exterior art work created by the artist for the New Orleans Court of Criminal Justice. IAS image files contain photos of only the pelican and eagle reliefs over the windows. The image in the El Paso Time, Oct. 19, 1930, pg. 20, is of just the Broad Street side of the building.
